Day 75: Coburg, ON -> Belleville, ON
Jeremy and Skipper get drenched
Date: Saturday, July 29, 2023
Start: Coburg, ON (East Coburg Campground)
End: Belleville, ON (Staying with family)
Distance: 66km
Note: This is a shorter post (maybe even the shortest) because it was a shorter day, it rained and I didn't get pictures, and I'm not sharing every detail!
Having been promised rain all night, we woke up without a drop having fallen. Somehow it had missed us or evaporated away or who knows how the weather even works? The point is that it was dry and we quickly packed and tore down because it didn't seem like it was going to stay that way! It was cloudy and the forecast was promising rain in about an hour or two. We didn't want to press our luck so packed and got on the road as quickly as we could.
The goal for the day was my sister and brother-in-law's house in Belleville, Ontario. If we played our cards right, it promised to be a shorter day at just over 60km.
Once on the road we pushed into the wind along Highway 2 and through the countryside for 30km until we reached Colborne, Ontario. There we stopped at a convenience store and grabbed nuts, granola bars, and chocolate milk. We hadn't had a full breakfast to try to get out early and already needed to supplement it! We snacked in the parking lot and watched the clouds, wondering when our luck might run out. As we left Colborne, we found out...
There are no pictures between Colborne and Belleville because my phone was moved to a water proof bag for it's own safety. For almost the entire next 40km it rained. It didn't pour rain, but it was the consistent kind of rain that made sure you were drenched after 10 minutes in it. On top of this, there was a persistent and challenging wind that was directly in our faces. The ride turned into a bit of a slog as we pushed through wind and rain.
We reached Belleville utterly saturated and feeling exhausted from the effort or pushing into the wind. Thankfully, there was a shower waiting for us. There's nothing like a warm shower to make you feel human again!
We showered, ate, and spent some time catching up with my sister and brother-in-law. They made us tea and there's nothing quite like a warm cup of tea after spending the day getting doused. We both talked about how nice it was to be dry, warm, and both at the same time!
At some point we drove to a brewery and had dinner there. The day had weirdly cleared and it was even sunny outside! We enjoyed each other's company, good food, and good drink. When we went home we spent some more time conversing and then it was time for bed.
